Great stuff, Fred...

One of my first non-aviation weekends with the new Rebel found me at the Hampton Classic. I think I posted some of these earlier, but here's one I really liked:

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/Hamp05A.jpg

I have vague memories of visiting the World's Fair as a little kid, and on a recent trip to the area shot these:

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/WF03.jpg

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/Open37.jpg

With the stainless steel of the Unisphere, the water spray and the cloudy afternoon, it almost looks like a B&W photo.

I went down to DC a couple of months ago; it had been years since I was there, but it's always been a city I love to wander around, so much history, so many amazing sights...

I think this captures so much about the American experience - in Lafayette Park, right across from the White House, anyone can come and voice opposition to the government without fear of reprisal - how many places on Earth can you say that?

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/DC_003.jpg

While DC has many beautiful sights, it really comes alive after dark.

This was shot from the hill near the Iwo Jima Memorial:

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/DC_001.jpg

One of the figures in the new Korean War Memorial:

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/DC_005.jpg

And a view of the Washington Monument:

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/DC056.jpg

I guess it has something to do with growing up (literally & figuratively) during the Viet Nam War, but this monument has always been special to me - I was even at the dedication ceremony on Veteran's Day 1982:

Neat photos, Tim. That's a great effect on the Brisbane zoom shot, and I like your creative use of the macro.

Fred, I'm glad you started this thing. I remember telling one of the new photographers on the forum that he should try some non-aviation subjects for a change of pace and to learn some different techniques. It's interesting to see what we shoot when we're not focused on aircraft.

Great idea for a photo thread Fred!

Here is a pic I snapped driving up to Mt. Rushmore this past March. I pulled off the road and got this great angle. It was windy and freezing but I stayed awhile and took it in as this spot has the best view of the mountain and the Black Hills. Under the pic is the words of the man who carved them with his own hands.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-12/905683/newyorkav1.jpg

"Hence, let us place there, carved high, as close to heaven as we can, the words of our leaders, their faces, to show posterity what matter of men they were. Then breathe a prayer that these records will endure until the wind and rain alone shall wear them away."

Here is a pic of a Bison I saw while walking the Badlands in March 04'. He rubbed himself on a post for awhile and I got pretty close to him. He then got pissed when a car drove up and stopped to look. He walked toward the car and they split, he continued on and left into the vast countryside.

I think mine's a little easier to guess, but....I'll say you were on Main Street in Bayport by the old Honey's Bar. (I forget what the new name is).

My pic was taken from the apt complex at the end of River Ave on the West side of the street. Shooting North.

This was taken with the Tamron 70-300 zoom, but I must say that if taken
with any zoom lens, you will see some when taking shots like this....I
consider this extreme for any lens.....that is about the same as looking in
the sun.

about 100 feet down the beach, two girls were talking to me and asked
if they could use my zoom....because a big zoom was needed!
I respectfully declined and told them that I did not want to see that on
my harddrive....but if they wanted to take some shots....we are on a

One of the girls was into it, but I told them I am married.
