Iwas listening to tower about 7 this morning while AA 10 was landing they seemed to be coming in with some type of problem does anyone know what happened?

The DC-10 and MD-11 have had a bad name over many years. This is
because in the early years there were failures. Two were lost due to the
latching mechanisms in the cargo door. The bigger problem was that
there were no venting in the floor and when a explosive decompression of
the aircraft occurred, the floor would collapse, severing hydraulic lines
and causing catastrophic failures. The DC-10/MD-11 was also known as
a "TRICKY BEAST", Crash 10 and many other names because of they
were not your typical forgiving airframes. They were not really unsafe by
any means but they were just a little different handling. You never really
had a sweet-spot on approach, the deck never really wanted to stay at a
certain angle per set airspeed and the pilot needed to be on the yolk a lot
more than other commercial aircraft of the time and today. Other little
quirks were pushing the stick forward after the mains would touch down
and the speed-brakes deployed because of the tendencies for the aircraft
wanting to pitch up. They also had failures due to hard landings where
the aircraft would sometimes want to be on its back and win. (THESE
WERE REALLY HARD LANDINGS)

I really do not consider the AA DC-10 in Chicago a problem with the
aircraft because that was a total pooch screw with maintenance trying to
put an engine and pylon in place at the same time (Later found to be a
real NO-NO). Even today if the pylon/engine was lost tearing out some
of the hydraulics like in AA 191, it would not cause a failure of the
airframe because of the lessons learned in that Chicago crash.

Your comment about waiting to see the NTSB site was taken as "Waiting
for the crash report" and I got a chuckle out of that given the history of
this aircraft.....an unjust joke, but still funny to me!
