I spoke to LGA Port Ops tonite, as a Public Service I wanted to give everyone a chance to mark your calenders, Saturday Sept 24th is the Kiwanis Annual Kids Day at the Marine Air Terminal at LGA. Although last years festivities where unfortunately canceled this year is a go. No word on what will be there, two years ago there was a US 734, DL Shuttle 733, AA MD80, Navy Lockheed Orion, F-18, and some other fun stuff. Some of us on this board met for the first time at that event. Hopefully this will be another fun Saturday and many of the NYC Team will be there, I know I will. Since some on this board have never been to one of these fun and FREE events I would like to invite some of my fellow NYC photographers to post some of there photos from two years ago. I hope to see many of you there. And one tip, come hungry, as all the Hot Dogs and Dunkin Donuts you can eat can be had for FREE.

Wow, Thanks for the date Ron! This is a really big day for the local guys. It's such an exciting event that often passes below radar.

I hope everyone can make it out there! :)

What time does this start?

LGA777
2005-08-22, 03:29 PM
Normally it's around 1100-1600, the end is the best part as the Military stuff departs. 4-22 has always been closed just in case someone decides to wonder onto the runway.

Just a little update on what I have heard so far. US will have an aircraft on display, not sure what type yet. AA plans on having a MD80. The Texans will be there and will probably do flybys on arrival and departure. Rumors of two Navy F-18's, nothing confirmed as far as large Military aircraft yet, perhaps an Orion again or C-130, personally I would love to see a C-17 but I am probably dreaming !

Last time, people parked over by Planeview Park or Landing Lights Park and just walked over the overpass. It's right there.

The one parking lot right near the event was allowing people to park there for free, that's where I parked the last time.

Josh, two years ago we parked our car by Planeview and walked down by the MAT. I remember Art putting his in the lot by the BP (is this what you're talking about, Tommy?).

We parked in LGA lot 6 or 7 don't remember I'm almost positive it was 7. Again the parking was free and the lot was real close to the festivities.

I've heard of the Marine Air Terminal, but I have no idea what it is. Is that the Terminal that's all the way on the other side of runway 4, positioned by runway 13?

Anyway, I would love to be there for Kids Day. Everythign looks great. And they let you tour the aircraft and actually see the interior?? And let you close to those engines?? That's real real awesome.

Hey Guys! First post here but I've been reading the forums for quite a while now. Last year I tried to come up for kids day but one of the many hurricanes brought remnants up to NYC that weekend and I had to cancel my bookings because there was no point in coming up to a rainy, soaked LGA by myself. Luckily DL was offering changing of destinations and dates free of charge due to all the hurricanes that month. Anyway... I'd like to come back again this year but I'm weary of bad weather again. For you all, if it rains, no biggy, you just stay home. For me, its a wasted $200. I found a fare for $180 on Delta that would be perfect with times/dates but I'm not sure. If I came, it'd be a weekend trip. Hopefully Sunday would be used to do JFK but I can't do JFK by myself so I'd need someone from the NYC crew to show me around. Chances are I won't be able to afford this trip due to the fact I just bought an LAX trip for October but I'll look at my budget.

Ok guys... I just looked at prices and my budget and unfortunately there is no way I could do a weekend trip, unless someone would be willing enough to open their couch to me or somethin for the night. Best hotel price I found for the night of the 24th is $130 around LGA. That's almost as much as the airfare. I could POSSIBLY swing a day trip but I hate to go to NYC for only a day. I did that last time I was there and I said that next time I come up, it'd be for a longer time. I'm not sure yet. I'll see what happens. DL for the day is $150 and $180 for the weekend. What do you all think?

Guys,

Few questions:
-Do they allow camera bags inside?
-How to get there from DLS terminal?
-Do they have website?
-Are there any places where you can shoot taxing/landing/departing airplanes?

I would love to come to LGA. I have $100 voucher from DL to use it by the end of this year. If somebody can answer to my questions I can start thinking about trip to NYC again.

Now, little bit advertisement for my home town airport :) I'm inviting all of you :)

Also, if you are insterested. IAD has Plane Pull every year. They are collecting money for special olympics for kids. This year it will take place on October 1st, starting at 11am until 4pm. You are on the FedEx ramp right next to active runway 1L/19R. Great place for pictures.
On this picture you can actually see where exactly it takes place. Those construction guys are in the spot where you can walk without police harrasing you

And here are pictures from that spot

To answer some of your questions

Do they allow camera bags inside? Yes

-How to get there from DLS terminal? I'd be more then willing to pick you up and drop you off, there is also a free shuttle between terminals at LGA, U could take the shuttle to the Marine Air Terminal, the show is very close to that terminal.

-Do they have website? Not Sure

-Are there any places where you can shoot taxing/landing/departing airplanes? Depends on what runways they are using.

PhilDernerJr
2005-09-06, 01:02 PM
The DLS terminal is the Delta Shuttle Terminal.....it's about a 40 second walk from the Marine Air Terminal to the Kids Day entrance. ;)

No need for Tommy to pick you up.

Is 432mm good enough of a lens to bring that day?
How close can we get to the planes?
From the spotting spots near LGA is a 432mm lens good enough? (disregarding kids day).
Thanks

PhilDernerJr
2005-09-06, 06:10 PM
777heavy,

You'll be so close to the planes that you can touch them. 432mm is too much for this kinda of event. I'd recommend a lens that is anything under 100mm.

All of this is with the exception of the Skytypers show.

Hi,
Most the landing at LGA-are they comming in on the 04 runway or the 31?

fly.mcs
2005-09-08, 06:41 PM
777heavy, are you talking in general or are you talking about on September 24th?
For a fact, I know that runway 13-31 will be closed on September 24th so runway 4-22 will be the only one in use.

jakbar
2005-09-08, 06:57 PM
How can they possibly use 4-22 with so many people so close to the runway? That's pretty dangerous. However, if 4-22 is in use while we're at Kids Day....all I can say is that people had better bring a lot of memory cards for their cameras! I may have to be escorted out by security after the event is over. :)

Michael, are you gonna be there?

LGA777
2005-09-08, 07:13 PM
I really believe the Port will change, I hope I am wrong but I predict 4-22 will be closed on the 24th. They may have more work to do on 13-31 but there is enough work that they can find something to do on 4-22 !

Hey Ron. I think they're going to use 4-22 and close 13-31.
Futterman sent me this link a while back: http://www.laguardiaairport.com/aviatio ... 05_aoa.pdf (http://www.laguardiaairport.com/aviation/lga_2005_aoa.pdf)
The link shows the closures of each runway; the top bar shows 4-22 runway closures and the bottom bar shows 13-31 runway closures.
It looks like 13-31 should be closed Sept. 24; let's hope!

And Josh, I am gonna show up. Hope to see you there, as well as Phil and Ron.

PhilDernerJr
2005-09-08, 08:31 PM
fly.mcs,

Like Ron said, they will probably change that because of the proximity of the show to the runway.

I couldn't possibly imagine them sticking to that schedule. I don't think they took Kids Day into effect when making that schedule. I would not take it as bible.

fly.mcs
2005-09-08, 09:59 PM
Yeah, maybe you guys are right.
Also, I just looked at a diagram of LGA on AirNav, and I had no idea the runway was that close to it!
I thought the Marine Air Terminal was closer to 13 than 4.

fly.mcs
2005-09-10, 11:32 PM
Hey 777heavy.
I'm not sure about the first two questions, but i have answers to the last two.
The planespotting park, aka Planeview Park, is walking distance from the Marine Air Terminal.
All you need to do is walk over the overpass and make a left. However, I'm not sure if LGA will be landing runway 4 that day, so planes might not go by that area.
The answer to your last question...nope. The neighborhood isn't a bad one.

Mario, that would be cool if we had the BBQ in your backyard. I think we need to start a new thread entitled "Post LGA Kids Day BBQ - NYCAviation End-of-Summer Get-Together" and get people to indicate whether they are coming. One suggestion is to only give directions out to people who indicate that they are coming, as opposed to posting directions here, so that we can get a more accurate head-count for the purposes of food, etc.

Speaking of food, my guess is that we should ask everyone who shows up to chip in a little for food ($5? $10?) so that no one or two people are stuck footing the bill.

Let's see if Phil has any other plans in the works before committing to this, but otherwise this could be really fun!

I just got home and will be running back out soon, but please start a new thread for this.

Thanks Mario!

this could double as mario's house warming party.... remember we were supposed to have one of those a while back too.
