Hi all:

On a recent flight from JFK to DCA I noticed several Delta Connection aircraft parked outside of gates 16 thru 18. Is this a normal thing? I always thought all of the Connection flights were accessed by bus.

Thanks in advance.

The CRJ's can be accessed by the jet-brides. Whether this is common practice or not to do at JFK, I don't know, but it could depend on a number of things, mainly time of the day and how many planes DL has at JFK at that time...

If you get enough of those CRJ's on the ground at once, you have to park 'em somewhere. Did this happen the day right after the storms? Could have had a lot of cancellations which meant extra aircraft on the ground.

Yes, normal. However, no jetways are used. You access the aircraft by walking down stairs and onto the ramp. They've been using that area for a while now. Along with the hardstands at the end of T3 (near taxiway K/KK).

Here's a shot of one resting near 16/17

And the hardstand location where pax are sent to by bus

Thanks for the answers, guys. Now back in the day when Pan Am was still around, did they use the gate areas around the present gate 12 for their Pan Am Express flights at JFK? Or did they ever use the remote hardstands? I didn't think they had that big of an express operation to their JFK hub.

also since delta has many sudsidaries like asa and comair and aca (now Independance Air) they need nore room to park their CRJ's also . . . why does SAA operate A343's to Johannesburg when they could use their A346's?
Just wondering cuz I alwayes see a -343- at the gate

IIRC Pan Am Express ATR's parked at the end of the terminal by gate 11.

Here's an example:
