From the JFK....Pilot was enjoying some off time with his aircraft and came to visit a friend. Must be nice!

Great use of taxpayer money, too.

It's just another training flight - they need to fly a certain amount to maintain proficiency, so why not make use of the time?

I saw it parked out there and wondered what it was all about.

That's what I was gonna say.

And is that a missile on the side? Why only one?

that's nto a missle, it's a targetting pod. when the military dispatches airraft to civilian airports all offensive weapons are removed. just tthe way it works...

Fred, nice shot! Aircraft was here with the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team. (all those who do not like hockey, now have a reason) Was that N211DB? Saw the aircraft as I was headed home after the game, even in the pouring rain, the SkyOne logo was "lit-up" must be reflective stickers.

This one is there now (Sunday) It's registered to MHPL LLC out of Miami, and I'm guessing it's here with the Florida Panthers hockey club (I've seen it listed as being used by the Florida Marlins baseball team earlier this year). They're playing the Islanders on Monday afternoon. It's a 1 pm game time, so look for it to leave sometime late in the afternoon - bring your camera to work Tommy!

Yea, I got a few shots of her when she landed during the airshow rush of 2004 on Saturday when the Blue Angles were in town.

Here are some old shots of her....Smart looking paint job!

It seems that I am a very bad person. Nick stopped by one day and saw
me shooting pictures of the 727 horse carrier and I jumped in my car and
tore off! See, most of the time I do driveby’s at Republic and sometimes
only stop for as little as 10 seconds. As a peace offering to Nick, I
decided to spend HOURS of sorting through old photos just incase he
missed some aircraft in the past few years. This is only a tiny bit of the
jets that I have photographed and I am trying to stick to one of each type
unless it is large or special in some way. I put forward this olive branch
to you Nick. I hope to go spotting with you some day but I usually just
stick to my Derf style driveby’s.

In terms of actual PHOTOGRAPHY, Fred is among the best I've ever seen.

His motives are unorthodox these days with regards to the Anet and JP standards that are pressed onto shooters, and he simply rocks his own style and comes away with absolutely gorgeous stuff.

Thanks Phil, I think it was mainly because I did not have a zoom.

And it helps that he is able to get access to places we dont have access to. :)
99 percent of the time, I do not have the access and have to resort to
using the camera on the tripod next to the fence! almost all the side
shots are done that way! ;)

In the first series of 88 pictures I posted, ONLY 27 pictures were taken
with any kind of Access, that includes me being in the helicopter over
FRG. The second set of pictures, 6 was were access was needed.

Does this mean you want to see more???

I wish I could get a real lunch break, so I could get some neat "Derf-like" photos. I have access but I cant break the chain between my leg and the desk. I've started bringing the smaller camera in the car for "emergencies" but getting away for 5 mins without being noticed is not easy. Damn! I'm jealous.

No idea

Lots of times a pilot will not get rid of an aircraft when things go south. I have seen where the spot is paid off for long term and the pilot goes into health problems....the family and pilot let the plane rot for years.

Could be a thousand other things...

Good to see FRG so well documented with so many fine images.

<<MATS and the sunset a few months before flying for the last time! >>

What an absolute shame this one is gone. Its a major loss.

Even if the late model ex-TWA bird can be kept flying, the MATS version of the Constellation was distinctive.

What Fred may or may not realise, is that in the pic of the LJ25, N125PT, the operator is Ventura Air Service...the hangar he got in the background.

As for the 737 charters....Miami Air (N752MA) brought in the Isles after their road trip. N251TR came in Monday with the Carolina Hurricanes,
and based on when and where parked, N332DL flew in the Washington Capitals (SkyKing according to FlightAware.com). All hockey charters for those not in the know

Moose, could you copy-paste the EXIF data from that first picture?

Model: Canon EOS 30D
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO: 100
Focal Length: 18mm (guess: 21mm in 35mm)
Exposure Time: 20s (20/1)
Flash: Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Exposure Program: Manual
Exposure Bias: 0
ExposureMode: 1
White Balance: auto
ColorSpace: sRGB

Shot with the 18-55mm kit lens. I actually used the "Auto Color" function in Photoshop 7.0 to remove the yellow cast of the ramp lights.

nwafan20
2007-01-15, 07:49 PM
Very nice, any reason for Aperture of f.7.1?

I was wondering what you were doing to keep that yellow tint off!

moose135
2007-01-15, 07:55 PM
I wanted to make sure I had enough depth of field, but if I went any smaller, I would have been pushing past a 30 second exposure. I don't have a remote for the 30D yet, so I couldn't really get into bulb mode.

I really should figure out how to do eliminate the color cast manually...I guess if I shot in Raw it would be easier (or so I've been told) I really didn't have time to play with the white balance settings in the camera, that's something I need to play with as well.

She came in late Friday night, bringing the Washington Capitals for a game with the Islanders. Fred tells me she is supposed to leave Sunday around Noon. Not sure if I will get there, but it would be worth it just to hear those old JT8Ds!

It seems like FRG was the popular spot yesterday, and I was even planning to head out there, since I was going to be out on the island anyway, but I woke up, saw the gray skies and slept in (and decided to leave the camera home). Of course, as soon as I finish up (~3ish) there's sun to be seen, and alas I'm without camera. I'll probably try it again in two weeks (Saturday 3/24) when I'm out on the island next, if anyone wants to meet up there.

Once the crew and various ground personnel were out of the way, I took a few shots. I think $450 will get you a ride on one of the bombers. At least that's the price they were asking Memorial Day weekend for the B-17.

Personally I am looking forward to this weekend, cooler than August, and should be a little more warbird/bomber action.

I know they used Miami Air last year, don't know about prior to that. They usually park down the south end (near Atlantic). I've seen Midway there in the past, parked at Sheltair overnight. I forget who was in town, but I remember it's routing matched the team that was in to play the Isles.

The Islanders used to use Midwest before they switched to Miami Air last year. When Midwest came in this past season they were carrying the St. Louis Blues.

Should be activity in FRG late tonight as after the Isles play in Buffalo tonight, both teams have to fly down to play at the Coliseum tomorrow night.

I ran to the end of the runway for this great picture of the aircraft above with my flash freezing the aircraft... The aircraft approaches... and you know this from the sound! It gets louder and louder then you start to see a dim light into the thick clouds/high fog at 60ft. Had a meeting in Melville first thing this morning, then headed over to FRG to see if I could catch that AC A320. Unfortunately, it's not parked in a good spot for photography. I was sitting in the terminal lot, when I saw this roll out in front of me landing Rwy 1:

http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/226499859-L.jpg

It's the EMB-145 of Dale Earnhardt, Inc NASCAR team. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series award banquet is this Friday night in Manhattan, and it looks like this was bringing team members in for the festivities - there are actually a number of events over the next few days. I was a little surprised to see it, as I thought most would use TEB.

The N-number is based on the numbers of the cars the team runs - #1 and #8, as well as the #3 used for many years by Dale Earnhardt before his death in 2001.

http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/226500104-L.jpg

http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/226500020-L.jpg

It's parked down at Atlantic - once the bizjet next to the fence moved, it was easy to shoot. That's the tail of the AC A320 sticking up behind it. Once they parked, a stretch Town Car limo and 2 Escalades pulled up, but my view of the deplaning pax was blocked. Just as I was finishing up, one of the ramp guys headed my way, yelling something I couldn't hear and waving his arms. I just waved back, jumped in the car, and drove away :D

Checking FlightAware, it looks like Robert Yates Racing Beechjet 400 is due in around 3:25 this afternoon.

Got back out to FRG to catch the Yates jet, landing Rwy 32:

http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/226614293-L.jpg

It parked over at Sheltair, right up near the fence. May be shootable tomorrow, but this afternoon, it was directly into the setting sun. I did get to see team owner Robert Yates (one guy I respect immensely) his son Doug (who takes over the team next year) and their wives as they drove past me in the back of a big Suburban. BTW, the DEI jet was moved back near that AC A320, in a tough to shoot spot.
