As I understand, it was an automatic signal that the transponder sent out, out of the pilot's control.

to my knowledge, transponders do not transmit anything but what you tell them to. there is not 'auto' mode on them... i can't speculate as to what really happenned, but in all honesty phil you shouldn't really believe the media all the time. ABC's aviation expert was the one that said TWA'a 747s needed to make a fuel stop in Gander, Newfoundland.

I don't see why a transponder, even if controlled by human, can't send off a wrong signal.

Just like a gun the misfires. Just goes off sometimes.
