A forecast for temperatures in the low 80’s and sunny skies will look to create the perfect beach weekend for both air show fans and beachgoers alike, as the 2016 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach takes flight this Saturday and Sunday headlined by the United States Navy Blue Angels. “It is a very exciting time for us,” states George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director of New York State Office and Parks. “The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach has become Long Island’s most visited special event which sees between 350,000 – 400,000 spectators each year along with an economic impact estimated between $13 – $14 million.”
While there is nothing small about these numbers, the combination of perfect weather and stellar performances puts this year’s event on track to break records. “This year’s show at Jones Beach has one of, if not the best performer line up that we have ever seen,” remarks George Gorman. “In addition to the Blue Angels we have added both the Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and the Breitling Jet Team, all the way from Europe. It is the first time in our Air Show’s history that we will have three performance jet teams.” As if three jet demo teams isn’t enough, the event will also include performances by the United States Air Force F-16 demo team as well as the military’s newest 5th generation fighter, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Aside from military participation, this years show will also play host to some of the top civilian performers as well including Sean D Tucker, Jeff Boerboon in the Jack Links Jet Waco ‘Screamin Sasquatch’, The GEICO Skytypers and a variety of WWII warbirds from Long Island’s own American Airpower Museum to name a few.
While the show has become a weekend tradition for spectators, it has also become popular among the performers as well. “The Jones Beach Airshow is one of the teams favorites as we have been involved since the shows start, watching it become one of the largest attended airshows in the country,” states Larry Arken, Commanding Officer and flight lead with the GEICO Skytypers. “Hosting some of the best performers at a beach location makes it a great weekend opportunity for everyone and the fact that it is our home show makes it even more special knowing that our friends and family can easily attend.”
While there is no arguing that this year’s show will once again be a fun and eventful success this holiday weekend, John Klatt Airshows helps to remind us what the holiday weekend is really about. “John Klatt Airshows and Jack Links have teamed up with Carry the Load this season, a non-profit organization that aims to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day,” states Tim Jarvis, Director of Operations with John Klatt Airshows and Jack Links Jet Waco. “Carry The Load looks to restore this awareness through honoring the military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel who dedicate their lives to keeping our country safe.” Something to think about and reflect on when enjoying the weekend festivities.
