Delta Introduces “Smart Travel Pack,” Rolls Many Extras Into One

The usual selection of extras on the Delta.com booking page

It is no secret that purchasing airfare on just about any airline involves an obstacle course of fees and charges. Checking a bag? Credit card, please. Want an exit row seat? Yea, there is probably a fee for that too. The list of fees can be a bit dizzying at time, and picking what you want for each flight is a bit of a chore. For those looking to navigate around these fees on each flight, Delta is looking to clear that process up a bit.

On Friday, Delta announced a new “Smart Travel Pack,” which is aimed at making it a bit easier for passengers to get all the perks they want, without paying individual fees at each booking. The new option, available for a one time purchase of $199, includes a wide variety of popular travel extras. Passengers who purchase the option will receive one free checked bag, priority boarding, access to preferred seats (bulkhead, exit row, or front of the aircraft), discounts (50% on domestic travel, 25% on international) on economy comfort seats, and a 20% mileage boost. Of course, many of these extras are already included to SkyMiles members with the proper status, and that 20$ mileage boost might just help get you that status faster.

Anyone interested in the promotion can apply it to prior or new bookings for travel through January 5th, 2014. The benefits of the Smart Travel Pack will be included for any travel during the promotional period when customers include their SkyMiles number in their reservation, and also applies to up to 8 other people on the same booking.

For reference, priority boarding normally costs $10 per segment, a checked bag costs $25 each way, a preferred seat costs anywhere between $9 and $59 depending on the route, and economy comfort ranges from $9 to $180. The benefits of the “Smart Travel Pack” depend entirely on how much you fly, to where, and many options you would have selected without the bundle.
