A TACA A321 climbs out of JFK.

On Wednesday afternoon, Avianca announced their first route to Newark Liberty International Airport, with service from San Salvador, El Salvador, operated by TACA starting November 8th. The once daily service, operated on an Airbus A319, will depart San Salvador at 8:35am, and arrive at Newark at 2:30pm. The return flight departs after a quick turn at 3:35pm, arriving back at San Salvador at 7:55pm local time. The flight duration is just about five hours.

Both Avianca and TACA already have established service from JFK, but Newark is a new destination for them. Avianca recently joined Star Alliance, so the opening of flights to Newark may be to better leverage connecting flight opportunities at United’s hub. Recently, Cathay Pacific made a similar move by straying from JFK to add one daily round trip to Newark.
