According to @IndoFlyer and other Indonesian news sources, a Lion Air flight overran a runway on landing at Jalaluddin Airport (GTO/WAMG) in Gorontalo City, Gorontalo, Indonesia.

The 737-800 (registered PK-LKH) was operating as Flight 892 from Jakarta Airport (CGK/WIII) with a stopover in Makassar. Reports indicate that the aircraft struck several cows at some point during the landing sequence, but it is currently unknown if that contributed to the cause of the overrun. A crash photo indicates the cow (deceased) wedged underneath the main landing gear of the aircraft.

There were no reports of injuries aboard the aircraft.

This is the second accident for Lion air this year, after another 737 of theirs landed short of the runway into the water in Bali this past April in poor weather.

“A crash photo (GRAPHIC!) indicate shows the cow (deceased) wedged underneath the nosegear of the aircraft.”

    Need
a proofread check on that sentence, guys (for more than one reason)…
That’s not the nose gear. The tire on the left side of the photo is
clearly from one of the main gear assemblies. 🙂

Need a proofreading check on that sentence, guys (for more than one reason)… The tire visible on the left side of that photo is clearly from one of the nose gear assemblies as it’s entirely too large to be attached to the nose gear. 🙂

Who said Nose gear? (MAIN) gear is just that, not the nose.

If you’ll check the comments for story on NYC Aviation’s Facebook wall, you’ll see that Phil corrected the story after I left them a comment there, as well. When the story was originally posted on Tuesday morning, it stated exactly what I quoted above.

What do you mean “who said Nose gear?” Do you think I just made that quote up? 🙂

Today is the day for 737 overruns apparently, didn’t a Korean one overrun in Japan today too?!

    • Jason

Indeed it did, but it avoided any cows

They have to start lengthening RYs. They obviously don’t make pilots like they used to.

Text wasn’t formatting correctly when I first commented, so I deleted it a few times a finally got it to re-post correctly. No clue why Disqus has now decided to re-post the three deleted comments and shows them as posted by a guest?

  • Lion Air strikes again 🙁

New planes, modern fleet – but horrible pilots or why so many accidents?
