Do you prefer your New York City airports to actually be about 50 miles outside of New York City? If so, we have some good news for you! Ultra low cost carrier Allegiant Air is planning a comeback to New York City… well, close to New York City at least.

On Tuesday morning, Allegiant announced that they will be returning to Stewart International Airport, approximately 50 miles north of New York City. Allegiant previously served Stewart from 2005 to early 2007, and will be returning after a seven year absence. Starting OCtober 31st, Allegiant will operate flights to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) out of Stewart.

Additionally, Allegiant will be initiating service at Long Island’s Islip MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, about 45 miles east of New York City. The new service, which will begin December 20th, will offer two weekly direct flights to Punta Gorda, Florida, approximately 20 miles north of Fort Myers.

Islip MacArthur has struggled in recent years, with Southwest pulling several routes and a few failed attempts to lure some JetBlue service away from JFK. With the additions of tiny Penn Air, and now Allegiant Air, MacArthur may be at the beginning of a much needed rebound.

So there you have it, suburban New York City! Get ready for a new airline, and some really loud MD-82’s! You were tired of those CRJ200’s anyway, right?
