Motorists are not the only ones growing anxious about fuel supplies.
Now airlines have begun adding extra fuel on flights to New York, fearing the airports might not have enough fuel supply for return flights, AP’s Scott Mayerowitz reports.
Hurricane Sandy disrupted supplies of jet fuel, gasoline and home heating oil throughout the area as fuel tankers were not able to enter the Port of New York and supply pipelines and refineries were knocked offline by power outages.
In a practice known as “tankering,” a plane will carry enough fuel for multiple flights rather than only enough for the current flight. US Airways, Southwest Airlines and Republic Airways were among the airlines reported to be tankering fuel on flights to New York.
