Plane of Note: Cargolux Boeing 747-8 Freighter Makes First Appearance at JFK

It’s been over three months since Cargolux took delivery of the first three production Boeing 747-8 Freighters. Since leaving Seattle, they’ve mostly been hauling between Luxembourg and Asia, with a handful of trips to the states. Beijing, Baku and Budapest had been visited by Boeing’s biggest bird, but before Wednesday, the Big Apple had not.

That changed as Cargolux’s LX-VCD, aka “City of Luxembourg,” arrived in New York Wednesday evening, marking the first appearance of the type at JFK. Despite landing just after sundown, planespotters made the best of the dark situation, grabbing some pretty good photos of the longest commercial jet ever built as it touched down and dropped off some pallets before heading off again, this time for Houston.

We haven’t spoken to Cargolux, but a brief glance at some flight records makes it seem that the freight hauler is keeping their new planes in the air. Good news not only for Cargolux, but for Boeing, which hasn’t exactly had customers lined up to buy the newest version of their biggest jet.
