A Beechcraft Baron crashed in a mountainous area of North Carolina Wednesday afternoon according to the FAA. The number of passengers and their condition were not immediately known.
The six-seat, twin-engined Beechcraft Baron 58 (N77AR) was enroute from Fulton County Airport (FTY) in Atlanta to Wendell H. Ford Airport (K20) in Hazard, Kentucky when it went down. According to FAA records, the plane was built in 1976 and belonged to Aero Resources Corp based in Hazard, Kentucky.
First responders located the smoking wreckage of a plane in an area accessible only by all terrain vehicle and foot just before 6:00 PM local time. One was heard saying he expected it to be more a recovery operation than a rescue.
A staging area was established at Joe Brown Highway near Allen Bell Road in Murphy, NC, a remote area in the western portion of the state near the Tennessee border. The site was about 85 miles south of Knoxville, Tenn. and 120 miles west of Asheville, NC.
