A Volga-Dnepr Airlines Antonov An-124 chartered by Japan’s disgraced Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) landed in Atlanta on Friday to pick up a giant Putzmeister concrete pump for delivery to Japan.
The 190,000-pound pump will be used to spray water onto the damaged nuclear reactors at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. TEPCO reportedly bought two of the pumps, which can be operated remotely, for about $2 million each. The second pump will be picked up from Los Angeles on Saturday by another An-124.
Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport officials said via Twitter that the flight was expected to depart “after 7am” on Saturday.
