Newark Airport Control Tower Evacuated Due to Fire Alarm

Update 7:25pm: Newark Liberty Airport has resumed normal operations. There was not a fire, but a faulty sensor triggered an alarm forcing the tower’s evacuation.

Arriving flights from within the eastern half of the US are being delayed an average of one hour.

A fire forced air traffic controllers to evacuate the control tower at Newark Liberty Airport Friday evening, the FAA said.

All outbound flights are grounded as a temporary control center is set up in the airport’s Terminal C, according to WNBC. Inbound flights are being diverted to other airports.
