Cargo Plane Ground Collision At Boeing Field Surprises 747-8I Revelers

While hundreds celebrated the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental’s first flight at Boeing Field on Sunday, a Nolinor Aviation Convair CV-580 cargo plane (C-GNRL) jumped its chocks during an engine run, colliding with a fence, a container loader and an Ameriflight Piper PA-31 (N27579). Fire crews responded and there were no apparent injuries in the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing the Convair’s engines running at high RPM followed by the sound of a collision. They looked across the ramp where they saw puffs of white smoke rising from the aircraft, likely from the engine.

This marks the second accident at Boeing Field in the past eight days, both involving Ameriflight. On March 11th, an Ameriflight cargo plane landed with its gear up, temporarily closed the airport’s longest runway.

NYCAviation correspondents Brandon Farris and Tad Carlson, on hand to cover the Boeing event, were able to snap these photos.
