At least 10 people were killed on early Sunday morning when a large cargo plane crashed in Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi, according to police and local television reports.

Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority said the Russian-made cargo plane crashed in a residential area of Karachi at approximately 1.47 a.m. local time. The plane, which local media reported was a Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft, had taken off from the city’s Jinnah International Airport several minutes before the crash.

Aviation officials said eight crew members were aboard the aircraft, which local television reported to be owned by an airline called ‘Sunway Airlines’. Two foreigners were among the crew members.

Numerous houses near the crash site, some which were under construction, were damaged by the crash. Several hours were on fire.

Police said at least 10 people had been killed, including all crew members and two people on the ground.
