Icelandair to Begin Washington DC Flights

Icelandair on Thursday announced it will begin seasonal service from Washington Dulles International Airport with four flights a week starting May 17, 2011 through September 13, 2011.

Washington, D.C. will be the latest city added to the 2011 Icelandair schedule with a total of eight North American gateways and over 20 destinations in Europe.

Earlier this year Icelandair announced service to a host of new destinations in Europe. Their 2011 network will feature more departures from North America, with the largest schedule in its 73 year history.

“This new international air service will greatly benefit air travelers in the metropolitan Washington area, providing new travel options to all of the destinations Icelandair serves,” said Lynn Hampton, President and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

In addition to Washington, D.C. Icelandair, offers non-stop service to Iceland from Boston, New York-JFK, Seattle, and seasonal service from Minneapolis – St. Paul, Orlando Sanford, Halifax and Toronto.

The carrier offers over 20 destinations in Scandinavia, the U.K. and Continental Europe from its hub at Keflavik International Airport.

Icelandair previously served the Washington, DC area with flights to Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) between 1990 and 2007.
