German carrier Air Berlin announced Tuesday that it will be reducing the number of Boeing 787 aircraft it has on order from 25 to 15.
The cancellation is worth $1.7 billion and is being made to adjust for the lesser demand for travel. The airline also cut the number of 787 options held from 10 to five. Air Berlin is also deferring the delivery of nine Boeing 737s from 2010 and 2011 to 2015 by mutual agreement. Air Berlin Chief Financial Officer Ulf Huettmeyer noted, “the agreement with Boeing demonstrated that Air Berlin believes in the future of the 787 aircraft”.
He added that Air Berlin is looking forward to the delivery of its first Boeing 787 in November 2015.
