Phil is on the left, Matt is on the right, as opposed to what the Today Show might tell you.

We are so very excited to announce that Flightglobal has named NYCAviation the Best Enthusiast Site of 2009! In addition we also came in 3rd for Best Use of Social Media!

The Winners List was announced today, with NYCAviation ranking top three in their two new categories, only losing in the Social Media category to Manchester Airport and Northrop Grumman.

This is a huge accomplishment for us, not only as a website, but for the planespotting community. We went up against websites that share a passion for aviation in so many different aspects, not just aviation photography, and we came out on top.

So much of our success is accredited to Editor and Director of Technology, Matt Molnar, for what he’s done in implementing the site upgrades, kicking butt with two feet on the technical and writing side, and the outstanding job he’s done in networking our site, as seen on Twitter. We also have many other contributors that help hone our content into what you see here daily.

Our triumph can also be attributed to all of the support that we’ve received from our members and every enthusiast that has ever visited this site. We do this for you folks and without your visiting and input, we’re nothing.

The past half-year has been huge for us, and it’s honestly just the beginning. Our traffic today alone is so high that servers are strained. We’ll soon be upgrading the servers and modifying our message boards to give everyone a hassle-free and complete aviation enthusiast experience. Stay tuned!

You all will play a vital role in our future success! We’ll need volunteers…writers, programmers, photographers, researchers, and more. Drop us an email and find out how you can help!

Again, thank you all for coming to NYCAviation. Our success is your success. We will make plans very soon to announce a celebratory party!

UPDATE: Flightglobal has made their official announcement which includes the judges’ comments on the winners!

For the Best Enthusiast Award, they said “The judges felt that NYCAviation was worthy of pole position for being “visually engaging”. It mixes practical guides and information with fun features and a busy forum. Judges liked the way it made use of web tools like Google Maps, Flickr and Twitter for the benefit of the site and community and concluded: “This is a site that really helps enthusiasts do what they love.”

For the Social Media Award, “The judges liked NYCAviation, a forum which is “growing into a large community of aviation enthusiasts”. They found “feverish interaction” on its traditional website forum as well as the Facebook and Twitter platforms…”This has translated to community growth and recognition. NYCAviation has a real opportunity to build on this base compelling crowd-sourced applications,” they said.

A big thank you to the Flightglobal team for recognizing us and for all that they do for the aviation community themselves!

It's a major award!
