Small Plane Crashes Off South Shore of Long Island
Two men escaped uninjured after their single-engine plane crashed into the frigid waters of Great South Bay off the coast of Sayville this afternoon.
The pilot of the 1946 Stinson Voyager reported engine problems almost immediately after lifting off from the all-grass runway of Bayport Aerodrome (23N) at 12:55pm.
According to a Long Island Press report, he tried to set the plane down along the shore, but instead skidded along the partially frozen shallow water about 30 feet from the beach.
Both men manged to wade ashore before the plane nosed down and began to sank. They were taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
