A large crane being used to build a new trash transfer station in College Point got a bit too close for comfort to LaGuardia Airport runway 31 arrivals on Jan. 8th. An article published in today’s New York Post reports that several flights were forced to divert to other airports until the crane was moved.
The Department of Sanitation-owned garbage hut has already been wrought with controversy due to its 2,000ft proximity to LGA Runway 13/31 and fears that it will attract thousands of jet engine-killing birds. NYC officials swear that the new structure will be sealed tight enough that birds will not be attracted to it, and the FAA and Port Authority gave the city a green light to build it. They do not seem, however, to account for the barges which will be carrying tons of unsealed trash out of Flushing Bay to the East River, along the edge of Runway 13/31, and past the end of Runway 4/22 as well.
