October 6th in Aviation History

1977 – The prototype for the MiG-29 is flown.

1976 – Cubana Flight 455, a DC-8 (registered CU-T1201) crashed shortly after takeoff out of Bridgetown, Barbados after two bombs exploded, killing all 73 on-board. The bombs were placed by men who were said to have connections to the CIA and anti-Castro Venezuelan Secret Police.

1955 – United Airlines Flight 409, a DC-4 (registered N30062) crashed into Medicine Bow Peak near Centennial, Wyoming, killing all 66 on-board. Investigations brought about several theories, but nothing certain as to what caused the controlled flight into terrain.

1922 – Lieutenants John Macready and O.G. Kelly set a new world flight endurance record, staying aloft in their Fokker T-2 monoplane for a total of 35 hours, 18 minutes and 30 seconds.

1908 – Wilbur Wright and a French writer make the first passenger flight of over one hour.
