1967, First successful test flight of the Saturn V rocket, which would power man’s first visits to the Moon.
1969, Allegheny Airlines Flight 853, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 (N988VJ) en route to St. Louis, collided in mid-air with a Piper PA-28 (N7374J) at approximately 3,550 feet near Fairland, Indiana, killing all 85 people on board both aircraft. The Piper was leased to a student pilot making a solo cross-country flight. The crash was blamed on deficiencies in the collision avoidance capability of the Air Traffic Control system.
1970, BOAC Flight 775, a Vickers VC10 coming from Bahrain, was hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and flown to Dawson’s Field in Jordan. It was the fifth plane hijacked, with the four others having been taken on September 6. Within two weeks, all hostages were recovered with no fatalities.
1994, A Tu-22 acting as a chase aircraft to photograph an Aeroflot Tu-134, collides with the Aerflot jet over Zhukovsky, killing 7. The Tu-134 (RA-65760) fell into a forest and the Tu-22 managed to land safely.
1994, Space Shuttle Discovery makes its 20th trip to orbit for mission STS-64.
