On this date in 1969, Brazil’s Ministry of Aeronautics formally created what has become one of the world’s foremost aircraft manufacturers, Embraer. Without getting into politics at all, the people at Embraer were undoubtedly proud that one of their aircraft played an important role in the 2008 United States presidential race. The McCain/Palin camp leased an E-190, reg N239JB, from JetBlue to ferry Gov. Sarah Palin to various campaign appearances across the country, for example in this photo shot during a stop in Orlando, Florida. After dropping off Palin in Anchorage one last time following the election, the plane was returned to JetBlue, in the process setting a world distance record for the type (and probably any Embraer aircraft) by flying Anchorage-Buffalo nonstop, 2,694 nautical miles.
